Kodi Helix or SPMC?
Hi. I bought an openhour chameleon and i approached a new world about xbmc, that i didn't know before. I read that someone use spmc and someone kodi helix 14: could someone summarize which are the reasons to choose one or the other for this particular type/model of hardware? I know that the official is kodi and spmc is a spin-off, so the release will come before in kodi and then on spmc, so i decided to install kodi, but i would like to know if spmc is better for my chameleon.
thanks

Simple, you use SPMC if you have a Receiver with 5.1 or more speakers,
because of 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS (later Dolby HD and DTS HD Master).

And you can use Kodi if you do not want to use 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS
(later Dolby HD and DTS HD Master) or have a Receiver with 5.1 or more
speakers.

Thank you very much. Another question: may i install them together on my chameleon or there are some conflicts because they use the same directories?
For example, i installed kodi helix with different add-ons and with eminence skin: if i install spmc (13.4 or 14 when available) i could have problems ?

RE: Kodi Helix or SPMC?
That's a good question. I had both installed on a test SD and they both seemed to work just fine. I installed and moved SPMC to the External SD and ran KODI on the internal. I did not notice any conflicts but when switching between them I did 'clean' the memory from the desktop tools menu and i used the default skin on both. Make a test SD and give it a try and let us know how it works out for you.

RE: Kodi Helix or SPMC?
SPMC is a fork of XBMC developed by Koying specifically for Android players. He works with manufactuers developing the fork for us android users.

If I was running linux on the OHC i'd use XBMC but until that day i'll be sticking with SPMC. I dont have 5.1 audio requirements SPMC is platform, android, based.

I tested the new nightly of KODI 5.1 Alpha with 1.0.11 and it works fine on video, audio is only HDMI PCM though.

Thats because Rockchip is not (and not want) to work with Kodi.

I don't think that is right. if you check out the discussions on github between xbmc developers you get a clearer picture on how they feel about android vs Linux and how koying is one of the few who is willing to spend time and effort on the ARM/MALI hardware for android.
Once the RK3288 chip was introduced on the xbmc forum opposition was surprisingly fierce and... firm advocates of the chip and openhour eventually got banned.Dodgy
Rockchip is working very well with koying and they would love to work with more xbmc developers.
just to set the record straight the fact that there is animosity can surely also be blamed on Rockchip for ignoring demands for source codes of changes they made on opensource and not understanding the rules of the opensource community.

Problem is.. we the users of xbmc lose because both side don't play well together.
I think OpenHour playes a major role in bringing the 2 together again by refusing to release illegal forked solutions like many other RK3288 vendors do, but insisting on supporting opensource compliant public releases only.

Some focus on problems and faults others on solutions and success... no question who is the happy one.

RE: Kodi Helix or SPMC?
So basically it is a pissing contest between the two, with us the end users caught in the middle. I sure hope Koyling is able to get the passthrough working with the video at some point in the near future.
In the meantime I have a spare SD card with 1.0.11 and the latest nightly build of Helix (15.1 Alpha) working just fine with all of my TV shows, they are not in 5.1 in any case for the most part.
The video is rock solid, no stuttering, and no white noise blasting my speaker's off the wall. For watching TV 7 CH Stereo is fine, I would love 5.1 for movies but can wait as long as I don't have to watch the video flicker like an old time movie.
I am getting pretty good results with 1.0.11 and SPMC 14.0 beta 2, no stuttering and passthrough working most of the time, get the white noise at start but one or two restarts will normally get rid of it and then the 5.1 works without stuttering.
Seems we are getting there slowly but surely.

Kodi is one of the best native applications for iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, Android and Windows OS. It is processing on simple processor designs. SPMC is an unauthorized fork of the authorized XBMC on OUYA app.
