How to Update?
Launched Kodi today and there was a message that an update was available and to visit a listed website.

I'm not sure if this message was just a global blast to all Kodi users, or if this is for us Gecko owners, but I thought that the version of Kodi that is bundled with the Gecko is a special version.

So can and should I update my Kodi, and if so, how?

RE: How to Update?
No, Kodi does an update check without knowing you need the hisilicon version on your Gecko. In Kodi Settings turn update check to off/never.

If there's a Kodi update we'll see and hear like we do firmwares on the forum.

OHC > HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using standard Kodi(MC) 15.2 no hware/acc OK
Downmix stereo 1.0.40/RK Kodi(RKlib) 15.2 infrequent audio gaps hware/acc OK

No DTS downmix available for inbuilt eMC player

Gecko> HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using Gecko Kodi 15.0 OK
Downmix using inbuilt MediaCentre OK

I can't find this setting.

I checked under System->Settings->System, with Settings level on "Expert", and can't find it under Video output, Audio output, Input devices, Internet access, Power saving, Debugging, nor Master Lock.

I checked all the categories one level above as well: Appearance, Video, TV, Music, Pictures, Weather, Add-ons, and Services. Nada.

RE: How to Update?
Try going into either Android Settings > Apps and turning off the Kodi app update or Google Play and turning Kodi updates to Off.

Don't dare say Kodi is anything other than mutts nutz on that forum though.
