RE: 20160121 (1.0.40) - Beta Open Hour Chameleon Android Firmware
When running Library updates in the background or some other network I/O and CPU intensive processes the audio issues are back if you start playback on a HD audio movie.
I think the audio automatically falls back to 2 channel PCM if the buffer is depleted.

Can anyone replicate this scenario, or is it just me?

Some focus on problems and faults others on solutions and success... no question who is the happy one.

Chameleon 16GB SD 32GB micro SD <-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10 + 6 Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
10 NTFS 2TB USB drives on 3 hubs attached to a A400, 2 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB, 2 Seagate Central NAS 4TB.

Ah rats, I forgot about this. When I turn TV on the Chameleon, then back on, it goes to 720p which is rather annoying.

The Gecko had an option I could turn off to stop that (What was it, Smart/Auto display something?) but Chameleon does not appear to have it. I will move back to Gecko for now.

Yep as soon as you start loading Kodi up with repositories and addons then you get audio gaps and stutter back. Nothing like as bad as before, you can watch now without it being so annoying but if its movie night etc. its not something that you should have to put up with.

Can't help with the audio as I only ever have stereo needs Willem.

This is like Lundman and others say a big step in the right direction though. My Chameleon stays at 1080p on my TV even when I turn the TV on/off and change the channel.

OHC > HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using standard Kodi(MC) 15.2 no hware/acc OK
Downmix stereo 1.0.40/RK Kodi(RKlib) 15.2 infrequent audio gaps hware/acc OK

No DTS downmix available for inbuilt eMC player

Gecko> HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using Gecko Kodi 15.0 OK
Downmix using inbuilt MediaCentre OK

If this is the case then it seems to me thread/thread affinity/thread sync related, which is nothing to do with RockChip or any other specific SoC (other than raw single thread performance), but rather that Kodi is coded this way and trying to do (process, execute) too much in a single threaded framework. This begins to bite when using an Android version of Kodi as oppose to one compiled for Windows/Linux. Why? The latter are usually installed and ran on much faster CPU's with far higher brute force single threaded performance per core, i.e. RISC/CISC CPU design metrics come into play etc.

It's a pity there isn't a way to overlay CPU usage on all cores over the Kodi movie screen. Last time I checked Kodi had a debug mode, though how this works and whether it writes CPU usage to a text file is something else.

(May also be interesting). I've also tested this latest Kodi release (from OHC firmware 1.40) on a HiMedia H8 Octa featuring an 8 core 3368 RK SoC and more importantly, Android 5.1. Even when add-ons are loaded in the background when playing a movie there isn't (at least my eyes and ears haven't noticed it) a delay/pause/hesitation of any kind. Perhaps the Kernal inside Android 5.1 has been re-written to better allocate CPU resources of the many cores found in today's SoC's. As a result this could have contributed to having a positive influence on what one may refer to "the smoothness factor" during everyday use. I doubt current versions of Kodi use more than 4 threads, 2-4 is probably an accurate guess, as such I'm reluctant to believe the issue lies in the fact that the OHC is a 4x1.8GHz CPU and the H8 Octa is a 8x1.2GHz CPU, regardless whether the source is 1080p or 2160p as the video is decoded via the GPU component, not the CPU of these players...

Just wondering how the build date of this Kodi can be 30 Nov 2015 but the git code date reported is 21 Jan 2016.
The build date can only be after the git code date.
So is this a Kodi from 30 Nov 2015 or 21 Jan 2016?

Just my experience. For wins time and process I do always this :

Turn On :

1 - first turn on my hdd usb where are stored all my media
2 - second turn on the Chameleon

Turn Off :

1 - first turn off the Chameleon
2 - Second turn off my hdd usb

It is a very simple thing. But if I don't respect this order there is lot of activity each time on HDD usb when Chameleon start (Hdd USB led will flash). I think this is process Android . But I m not expert at all ...

It seems scan all media like the first time you setting the Chameleon.
this lasts about an big hour ...

In all case I have not the same experience. No audio gaps and stutter back at startup...

Last little thing, like you say in a other post a expansive Sd card make no difference for read the media. You are right
But the difference between the Original SD card 8 Go and a Quick SD Card class 10 for all process around kodi and the template is very importante.

(I use this one (25 €) "Lexar Professional 32 Go SDHC Classe 10 UHS-I U3 633x LSD32GCBEU633 and the template Aeon MQ6)

the Kodi 15.2 from 30 Nov 2015 was customized to work with RK3288 and that was released on 21 Jan 2016.
This is not a official Kodi release

For illustrate and understand what happened, everybody can make a simple test :

1 - OHC and your media support (Hdd usb, nas, ...) turn on

Go in android settings => advanced settings => display => Wallpaper => Gallery

You should see thumbnails of your ALL picture media (poster, fanart, ... ) on wall display.

2 - Now turn off your media support

Wait only few minutes and all thumbnails are cleaned because the file source are disappeared

When you turn on your media support again, android starts his new scan process of all media to create these thumbnails at the next reboot of OHC.

If you have a very big library and your turn off only your nas, you understand why OHC is unusable when you turn on your nas.

For me this process is just useless. Perhaps for a phone not for watch movies Huh
If an expert Android knows a trick or command line to disable this process this person is welcome to explain how Big Grin
(his name in debug mode is "android.process.media")

It will be very very good if Dev team could disable this process on next release. Idea
This process consumes a lot of CPU resources and access disk for nothing Dodgy

RE: 20160121 (1.0.40) - Beta Open Hour Chameleon Android Firmware
after playing with the settings mentioned here - once disabling RKlibstagefright everything for 1080p and less worked - i never changed the output resolution in android settings and i left libstagefright and mediacodec enabled

for 4k i'm getting a green screen unless all hardware acceleration is disabled - it plays but it pegs the processor so it skips horribly and is unwatchable

any ideas for a combination for 4k to play? same result over SMB / NFS

ADJUSTING Android HDMI output set auto.
Kodi settings to Acceleration: codec libstagefright disabled
adjust the display 's refresh rate " is always
on the mkv goes to 1080/24
on the dvd iso goes to 1080/50
on Netflix goes to 1080/60
so I did not stutter . kodi in when I leave a dvd iso , is a long time . how can I fix this my only problem ?

RE: 20160121 (1.0.40) - Beta Open Hour Chameleon Android Firmware
Just installed this and have just tried it for a couple of minutes in different files but yes seems to work very good!

My receiver couldn't set 1080/24 though. I have a Sony DA5200ES and I'm pretty sure I have set that before without any problems. (If I plug it to the TV I can set 1080/24) And using my other receiver plugged in to my projector it also works. So don't know whats wrong but seems to be something with my Sony. But I if set it to 1080/60 and on my short test I could't see anything wrong with that so guess that works!

Regarding sound shuttering though! I also had BAD shuttering but just on some files with DTS sound it seems. But if I set "Keep audio device alive" to 'Off' instead of 'Always' in Kodi settings there are no shuttering! I do loose 1 second of sound after having pause awhile with this setting so would be great to be able to have 'always' on but something I can live with I guess.

Great update anyway!!! Hope they will keep the Rockchip custom Kodi updated when new Kodi versions are released though!

Keep the same setting mentioned in the first post. It`s working fine for me.

I tried the settings on the first post / first page and disabling libstagefright did nothing for me - it wasn't until i disabled rklibstagefright that it worked
