Stream / transcode to iPhone / Webrowser
Hi,

I've a qnap NAS TS-420 and an OHC.

This is working fine for me and I can access media (most 1080p mkvs) from my NAS.

Now I'm looking for a solution to stream the media to slower devices like my iPhone or a HTML5 Webbrowser. Unfortunately my NAS isn't powerful enough to transcode the 1080p mkvs. So I'm loking for a cheap solution.

Maybe there is a possibility to transcode the media over the OHC to my iPhone / Webbrowser / Chromecast? is the OHC powerful enough to transcode mkv on the fly?

Other idea: install ubuntu on the OHC and the plex media server - which brings me back to the question: is the OHC powerful enough? :-)

Cheers

Can you not just install Plex on your Qnap?

I could. But the NAS CPU /GPU is to slow to transcode mkvs on the fly Wink

did you try VLC on iPhone it should play MKV?
it should play if you can get to the files on your Qnap

Hi Willem55,

Yes, that works. Switched the Plex Setup to external player and activated the good old VLC as default player. So far so good :-)

One big plus would be now, that the stream is transcoded (to 4mbps for example) - otherwise my 4G traffic is used after 10minutes :-)

Cheers,
Kevin
