RE: Root the Gecko?
Moved outof rooting the OHC thread and into the Gecko section.

Looking at earlier reviews gives 'Firmware not rooted, and I could not find a method to root the firmware. The company also replied there’s not rooted firmware.

You'll have to research to see if its developed further since launch on xda/freaktab/etc.

Quickly looking it is possible to root hisilicon devices but the early googling gave results including installing CMW and require unlocking the bootloader etc.:

You need ADB drivers etc. as well. Off to the day job!

OHC > HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using standard Kodi(MC) 15.2 no hware/acc OK
Downmix stereo 1.0.40/RK Kodi(RKlib) 15.2 infrequent audio gaps hware/acc OK

No DTS downmix available for inbuilt eMC player

Gecko> HDMI > TV (Panasonic 42G20)
Downmix stereo using Gecko Kodi 15.0 OK
Downmix using inbuilt MediaCentre OK

RE: Root the Gecko?
Chris, have you actually tried and tested your proposed solution? and is it really a solution for less than advanced kodi users/developers? when I think rooting, I think of flashing firmware with or without having to resort to factory reset. Is there any such solution for Gecko? Also, the bootloader unlock method mentioned in that link is for Huawei devices - is it confirmed to work with Gecko?

thanks

RE: Root the Gecko?
I took a look last night so far found no simple one click root solutions. I did not get a chance to try the known exploits though it runs android 4.4.2 so there should still be a few of the loop holes that were used in the past.

RE: Root the Gecko?
You can't try that method until the ADB drivers are released. then you'd have to look at installing CWM or similar on the device and use that to root after unlocking the bootloader if that's possible. It's the traditional way that I've used on phones in the past but not needed to yet.

There are APPS that claim to be able to Root devices but haven't tried any as I'm using the player builtin SMB server and so far I've only come across one aPP that required root and wouldn't install, ScreenRec. Going to look for an alternate first and my need for anything else is not pressing plus there are rumours re the likes of BBC APPs checking for rooted devices so leaving it pure and going to use the OHC for rooting endeavours.

There's a lot of research and searching for Android forums that have information etc. and looking at other devices using same chip etc. to do aswell I expect.
